Today I Refuse To Write About – An Exercise

May 16, 2011 by

Dear Stepmoms,

I wanted to share this amazing journaling exercise with you. If you’re game, grab your journal and super cool funky pen and begin with, “Today I refuse to write about…” Free write for 30 minutes and don’t stop. Any time you get stuck, start a new paragraph and start it with “Today I refuse to write about…” Don’t self-edit. Just write. Let it flow…from your mind to your pen to your journal.

I love this writing prompt and thank my writing teacher, Laurie Wagner, for tossing it my way. It came in handy last week while I processed my mother-in-law passing away and having my husband home on emergency leave from Kuwait. Feel free to read what I wrote and how the prompt helped me make sense of things I was feeling.

Feel free to share your results! I’d love to hear from you! If you’re a member, this post is also part of the Stepmom University forum – a private place to share your thoughts.
