Paying It Forward

Aug 12, 2009 by

Today it’s not about me or being a stepmom or living inside my own little bubble…it’s about how the collective “we” can make a difference in the lives of others.

This idea, one I hope takes on a viral tipping point, has been passed to me from Eyes Wide Open via Georgina at Dad’s Second Whatever

I am going to write two or three lines on three issues that I care about. I’ll attach links to each of them, so that if you want to know more, you can follow the links. I’ll chose pages that have the most succint information on them so that you don’t have to wade through pages and pages, wondering, “What is she on about?”

I believe that the universe works in mysterious ways. You never know who might read about one of these causes and think, “That’s something I’ve always wanted to know” or, “That might be helpful for my friend who is struggling with that issue herself”. So if I have 17 followers, and they each read just one link, and then they did the same thing on their blog with 3 causes that they care about, the potential to spread awareness about hundreds of issues is huge.

threeThree Causes Near and Dear to My Heart

The Susan G. Komen 3Day Walk for the Cure - as a five year breast cancer survivor, hearing the words “you have breast cancer” is devasting for women across our country and across the globe.  I walked in the Boston 3Day in 2005 – my team of four raised over $11,000 and every year I find someone who’s walking and support them with a donation.  I plan to walk again in either 2011 or 2012.

U.S. Wounded Solider Project - Another project near and dear to my heart.  I am prior active duty Air Force and my husband is NH National Guard.  The military runs through my family’s veins.  Helping and supporting those who put their lives on the line for us is the best tribute I can think of.  The mission of the US Wounded Soldier Foundation is to provide for the needs of our combat veterans deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Supporting them is our way of saying, ‘Thank You’ for their dedication and loyalty to the United States and the citizens they have pledged their lives to protect

The Jimmy Fund - About the Jimmy Fund:  Since its founding in 1948, the Jimmy Fund has supported the fight against cancer in children and adults at Boston’s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, helping to raise the chances of survival for cancer patients around the world.  I personally recieved life saving treatment at DFCI in 2004 – the best breast cancer specialists in the world make Dana Farber #1 in the world for fighting the ugly beast.

Your Turn!

Now it’s your turn to pay it forward!

What three causes are near and dear to your heart that you want others to learn about?  If you’re a blogger,  can you devote one day to these causes and pay it forward?
