Straight From My Heart

A poem by Joann Fernandez

They are a treasure
From their Dad and from you
And a cherished blessing
From God too.

I love your boys
And I hope you can see
I’m just their step-mom
Not the enemy.

This isn’t about who lost
Or who won.
Please don’t hate me
For loving your sons.

They want us all
To give hugs in peace
Or to shake our hands
At the very least.

I want you to know
This isn’t a race
You are their Mom
And can’t be replaced.

You and I have
Something the same
Two call us Mom
And two say our name.

Maybe someday
Just you and me
Can set aside differences
Over coffee or tea.

I hope this helps
And reduces your fears.
I really don’t want you
To cry any tears.

What I am saying
Comes straight from my heart.
I meant you no harm
From the very start.
